The state leader was known as the Doge, and he would hold his office for life, which means that death is what relieves him of his duty. A Prime Minister now runs it and the Vatican is headed by the Pope but is still under Italy's jurisdiction.

The other sites to behold in this beautiful city would be the Gothic Doge's palace, the Chamber of torment found within the Doge's Palace grounds, the Grand Canal, the Arsenal, St Marks Church and St Mark's square.
