You have heard of the romantic Gondola rides synonymous to Venice and have also probably seen them in one movie or another. It has been voted as one of Europe's most romantic spots. It is a city full of history and culture. It is predominantly Roman Catholic religious-wise and this is because of the influence from the Vatican, which is also found in Rome.

Venice is found in Northern Italy in a region known as Veneto. A city that was once conquered by Napoleon Bonaparte in the 18th Century and then subsequently handed to the Austrians. It was integrated into Italy in the year 1866. It is made up of about 110 islands and is crisscrossed by over 400 bridges. It is also known as the sinking city in that there are times of the year when the tide is high and the entire city is flooded with a stagnant lake. It has been suggested that water is pumped into the soil found under the city to literally lift the city. This is fascinating especially to visitors of this town. Other sites include the canals found all over the city where you will never miss seeing gondolas, the traditional boat-like vessels used to get around the city, moving along the canals. The state leader was known as the Doge, and he would hold his office for life, which means that death is what relieves him of his duty. A Prime Minister now runs it and the Vatican is headed by the Pope but is still under Italy's jurisdiction.

Some of its sister cities include Fort Lauderdale in the USA and Istanbul in Turkey. Venice is known for its beautiful Venetian glass work and it is used to make elaborate and exquisite pieces. The other sites to behold in this beautiful city would be the Gothic Doge's palace, the Chamber of torment found within the Doge's Palace grounds, the Grand Canal, the Arsenal, St Marks Church and St Mark's square. The city looks confusing at first glance and hard to get `around but using the canals and walking around is most definitely the best way to get around. Venice is well known for its weather; its below sea-level grounds, its historic sites, its romantic ambiance and for the fact that it is one of the major cities in a Italy; it holds so much culture and history it is a 'must-see' city and all this is found on www.hotelsinvenice-italy.com.
